  1. Do they only take call ups from finals heat, i.e., if a kid from consolation finals is one of the 8 next fastest he doesn't get in?

  2. That is correct Unknown. Jiwoo or any other swimmer for that matter must be in the championship final to qualify for state. The rule is listed in the UIL Swim Manual under the section called Post Season.

    1. I found "The first and second place winner in each event of eight (8) regional swimming meets will advance to the State Meet. The next eight (8) swimmers with the best regional final times overall will advance to the state meet." Is this what you're referring to? "Final" seems ambiguous.

  3. Agreed. I've read the manual and it says "The first and second place winner in each event of eight (8) regional swimming meets will advance to the State Meet. The next eight (8) swimmers with the best regional final times overall will advance to the state meet." So I can see the confusion. In the case of Jiwoo, he was "the best regional final times overall". There is no distinction between A or B finals. It just says "finals times". Did I miss a clarification somewhere else?

    1. There are no 'B' Finals. While they are listed as such on heat sheets, that are the Consolation Finals, which are not the same Regional Finals.

Championship meets are designed to have swimmers compete at a high level for two sessions not just one. Otherwise you would see swimmers intentionally tanking day one to "save up" to go faster on the second day.

  4. And "overall" is also nondescript. So really, it seems like there's a very strong case for a B finalist, although rare I'm sure, if fast enough, could conceivably satisfy the requirements in the UIL manual as stated - 'swimmers with the best regionals finals times overall'. Therefore, in the case you mentioned, or with any swimmer that has the fastest 'finals times overall', he meets the UIL requirements as stated, and as such, per the UIL manual, would be able to advance to state. Rare case, but something to seriously consider.

  5. Yes, but finals means finals. This will just encourage the elimination of a consolidation race. We dont want to get into a "everybody gets a medal" discussion.

  6. It seems clear to me. It says final, it does not say consolations.

  7. Consolation 'finals'. I get that it's clear to you. I understand your interpretation that 'finals' in your interpretation is distinguished by 'heat'. I'm sure it's an interpretation based on the practice you've experienced over years. I get that. Putting yourself into other shoes, however, you may be able to understand where there is ambiguity and confusion. It seems it is being said that the rule about pickups is based on an unwritten interpretation- one that seems clearly not well understood, even amongst different coaches and officials. Is there a place in the UIL manual or elsewhere (officially) that defines 'finals'? Because the word 'finals' also applies to the 'session' and is written in many places as such. Friday is prelims and Saturday is 'finals'. I'm just saying, if anyone ever wanted to legally challenge the pickups decision to state, e.g. In the case you mentioned, (unless the UIL manual, or the linked documents, defines 'finals' to be distinguished by heat vs by session), they would have a reasonable legal case and the swimmer should be allowed to get picked up for state (based on being one of the top 8 fastest regionals finals times overall). But that's just my interpretation.

  8. The Texas HS State meet is one of the toughest swimming competitions around (especially when you have to come out of a difficult district and region). You have to be at your best or at least good enough for 5 separate days over a span of about a month. Some regions don't have to taper for regionals and can make State due to less competitive regions. That's just how it goes. Rules used to state that you had to be top 4 to be called up. That rule was eventually was changed to the top 8 or 'regional final'. It was never meant to be all 16 swimmers. Jiwoo didn't perform for whatever reason on Friday so that's it. I have seen it happen to tons of kids. Same reason why kids who have their goggles fall off at the State meet in prelims and end up 9th but smoke the consolation and championship heats the next day don't end up on the podium. That's life. The rules are there and the precedent is there. A consolation heat is just that - consolation - it doesn't really matter how much you win a consolation heat by - 9th is as good as it gets. Fortunately for him, swimming is an objective sport and his time will count towards All-State consideration (TISCA, District, Regional, & State times). Best of luck in Austin.
